There is nothing between very expensive business and bottom-end soviet hotels in Russia. The best option to stay is hostels even if you are not backpacking or globetrotting. They are centrally located, often run by westerns, have friendly atmosphere and staff, offer not only dorms but single, double and family rooms and are excellent place to meet the same-minded independent travel mates. The rates start from 20 euro/dorm, 50-60 euro/per private rooms. In Mongolia and China rates are cheaper: 10 euro/dorm, 30-50 euro/ rooms.

There are plenty of hostels in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Ulan Bator, Beijing, Baltic States and Ukraine. You can easily book hostels thru our site. We are HostelWorld Affiliate. Cities without hostels

In no-hostels cities for budget traveller it is always option to stay cheaply in the clean and safe ‘rest rooms’ at the train station. They are similar to the hostels and everybody can stay there with valid railway ticket. Just not forget to bring ear plugs because it can be noisy at night. The prices are 5-10 euro/dorm, occasionally there are private rooms available.
