There are daily direct train connection between many European countries and Russia and former Soviet Union states. Moreover it is possible to reach Moscow, St. Petersburg or Kiev from any corner of Western Europe with only one – two changes of the train.  The train journey is exciting, comfortable and safe way of travelling.  It is also inexpensive and far more interesting than flying. Travelling by train is a real travel, where the journey is part of the adventure. If you're going to go by Trans-Siberian railway to the Far East, do it properly, starting in Europe and staying firmly on the ground. It needn’t too be long and takes only 5 days to reach China. The same is right for those who are travelling from Asia to the West. Think again, take a train!

Routes

There are three main routes to take from Western Europe to Russia.

Route 1, via Belarus:
the fastest, most comfortable and convenient
way

There are direct sleeping trains or sleeping carriages from Amsterdam, Basel, Berlin, Innsbruck, Munich, Paris, Prague, Warsaw, Cracow, Budapest, Bratislava and Wien to Moscow, St Petersburg, Minsk, Saratov, Sochi, Ufa, Samara, Kazan, Nizhniy Novgorod and Yekaterinburg and even to Irkutsk in Siberia or to Astana in Kazakhstan. But bear in mind: this route goes through Belarus. All western citizens need a Belarus transit visa even if they just pass it on the train. Getting a Belarus visa is straightforward. Please check our Visa chapter for details.

Route 2, via Ukraine :
the cheapest way, although it is slower and takes at least 2 nights.

To avoid Belarus with its transit visa you can take the second route to Russia through Ukraine, which no longer requires the EU, UK, US and Swiss citizens to buy a visa. Going via Ukraine takes an extra time but it is cheaper than the way via Belarus. There are plenty of trains to Moscow from Kiev or elsewhere in Ukraine. Alternatively there are also direct Ukrainian trains to Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan as well to Vladivostok in Russian Far East. There are direct sleeping trains or sleeping cars from Germany, Poland, Slovak republic, Austria, Italy, Hungry and other countries to Kiev, Lvov, Odessa, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk and Simferopol.

Route 3, via Baltic States:
useful if you are going to St. Petersburg, but with extra changes of the trains

Finally you can take the third option to go to Russia through Baltic States, which are in the EU and visa-free for most nationalities.  There are no direct trains to Baltic States from Western Europe,  first you need to catch the overnight train to Warsaw and then a daily morning train to Vilnius ( due the difference in track gauges between Polish and Lithuanian railways you need to change trains at border with a simple same-platform interchange) . The overnight train leaves Vilnius for St. Petersburg on odd - numbered days meaning for most Europeans to leave home on even-numbered days before. St. Petersburg itself is well connected to Moscow and to elsewhere in Russia.

Timetable

Check online timetable at http://bahn.hafas.de (in English, German, Dutch, Turkish, French, Italian, Spanish, Danish and Polish). However it is an automatic system giving sometimes strange connections in the middle of the night or offering too many interchange stations while in reality it is possible to change trains only ones.  Remember to check the days of running of your train, as many long-distance services don't run every day.  All international timetables are set on local time.

Trains

The international trains to Russia and ex-Soviet countries have modern air-conditioned sleeping-cars with ten compartments each of which can be used as 3-berth (2nd class) or 2-berth or single-berth (1st class). Passengers travelling alone share a 2-bed or 3-bed compartment with other sleeper passengers of the same sex. By day the compartment can be transformed into the sitting rooms. Each compartment has a washbasin, towels and soap as well as bed lines are provided.  Occasionally some trains have 2nd class sleeping-cars with 4-berth compartments. A restaurant car serves meals, snacks and drinks, but always travels with some supplies of your own. More information about the russian trains, coach layout, life on board, security and on you can read at our Train travel guide chapter.
