To visit Russia, China and Mongolia you'll need a visa. Visa can be tourist or transit one.  A tourist visa allows stays of up to 30 days (Russia and Mongolia) or 90 days (China). The Russian transit visa allows up to 10 days in transit if you're passing straight through Russia, but you aren't allowed to make any stop-overs. The Mongolian transit visa allows traveling by train to China if you're crossing Mongolia non-stop. Visas are only issued 90 days or less before your intended date of entry, so no need to apply before then

How to get a Russian tourist visa.

To get a visa you need supporting documentation ('visa support'). Theoretically, this must be a letter of invitation from a authorized Russian travel agency and an accommodation voucher from your hotels covering every night you plan to spend in Russia. In practice, you don't need any hotel bookings to get your visa. We sell you the necessary visa support for € 30/CHF 50, which allows you to get a visa without any prepaid accommodation, so you can travel freely just as you would in any other country.  More - if you book the Trans-Siberian journey with us we will provide visa support free of charge!

With your visa support papers, passport, visa application form, pass photo and copies of your travel insurance you’ll apply to your nearest Russian consulate. The visa issuing procedure takes 14 days, but if you have less time than this, 'express' services will help you get a visa much quicker. The visa fees and formalities vary from country to country, so check the latest visa information on the website of Russian consulate in your country.

When you arrive at the Russian border you will have to fill in a migration card. Once filled in, immigration officials will stamp your migration card, and return it to you. You must ensure you keep it safe and do not lose it, as you need to hand it in when you leave Russia at the end of your trip. Once you arrive in Russia, you have 3 working days to register your arrival with the authorities (this does not include weekends or public holidays). If you are staying in a hotel or hostel, everything will be taken care of for you. You will need to hand in your passport and migration card to the hotel/hostel staff. If you are staying in a flat, we provide you with the future detail how to register your visa.

Remember all direct trains from Western Europe to Russia pass through Belarus and you'll need a Belarus transit visa. However, getting a Belarus transit visa is quite straightforward. First you will need to get your Russian visa before applying for the Belarus one, and then bring or send your passport, one pass photo and train ticket copy to the nearest Belarus Embassy. A Belarus transit visa costs differently: for most European nations it is € 30 single/ € 55 return, but £44 single/£79 return for British or $ 100/$200 for American citizens. If you live in Switzerland we arrange a Belarus transit visa for CHF 90 single/CHF 130 return. To avoid Belarus you can take the route to Russia via Lithuania and Latvia or Ukraine, which no longer requires the EU, UK, US and Swiss citizens to buy a visa.
